| Summary, etc. | Actualmente es habitual ver un navegador GPS en un vehículo, buscar una dirección utilizando Google Maps, o encontrar una dirección sobre un mapa en la página web de un ayuntamiento. Pero éstas son solo algunas aplicaciones, quizás las más populares, de un mundo mucho más amplio que es el de los sistemas de información geográfica (SIG) y la geotelemática. Actualmente, esta tecnología juega un papel clave en muchos y muy variados sectores de la economía: desde la gestión de incendios en un parque de bomberos, hasta la gestión de las tuberías por parte de una empresa de gas, pasando por los mapas de uso del suelo o, incluso, el análisis del territorio para contrastar una teoría arqueológica. Pero, ¿por qué a veces introducimos las coordenadas de un punto y, al representarlas sobre un mapa, el punto no aparece donde se supone que debería estar? ¿Por qué a veces se pierde la señal del GPS?¿Por qué al encender el GPS unas veces tarda tanto en dar una posición y otras no? ¿Qué es un mash-up? ¿Es fácil crear uno? Para responder a éstas y muchas otras preguntas es necesario tener nociones de cómo funcionan los SIG y el GPS. Los SIG y la geotelemática han irrumpido en nuestra vida cotidiana en este último siglo. Sin embargo, en sus cimientos están disciplinas como la cartografía, con miles de años de historia. Esta obra nos presenta, por tanto, una tecnología que tiene puesta la cabeza en el futuro, pero cuyos pies se adentran hasta los mismos orígenes de nuestra civilización. |
